CLASSICS (LATIN & GREEK)

The purpose of the Riverside School's Latin program is for every student to gain knowledge of the classical languages (including a moderate amount of ancient Greek from seventh to eighth grade) and grammar, to understand the world of the Greeks and Romans, and to identify their contributions to western civilization. By the time of graduation, students shall be proficient in four major areas:

1. Communication in the classical languages: Students read and understand basic Latin/Greek phrases and short reading passages and speak, listen to, and write Latin/Greek as part of the language learning process

2. Connection of Latin/Greek with other disciplines and expansion of knowledge of own language: Students recognize and use elements of Latin/Greek syntax and grammar and identify elements of English and French grammar in reference to Latin/Greek

3. Knowledge and understanding of Greco-Roman world: Students learn Greek and Roman mythology by studying the deities, heroes, and epic tales, demonstrate an understanding of the values and practices of the Greeks and Romans from a historical standpoint, and examine the geography of the Greco-Roman world

4. Insight into Own Practices and Culture: Students compare and contrast their own culture with that of the Greco-Roman world, incorporate elements of Greco-Roman culture with their own culture, and relate stories and culture of Greco-Roman world to their own lives

National Latin Exam — Each spring 6-8th graders participate in the National Latin Exam, a standardized test of Latin grammar and classical history and
culture.  Awards are given for outstanding performance:
