COMMUNITY SERVICE
Developing a true sense of community is an integral part of the Riverside tradition. We design our schedule and activities to allow as much cross-grade interaction as possible. We embark on overnight field trips together and celebrate seasonal holidays as a school. We use the Responsive Classroom model to develop social skills in the classroom.
Eighth graders participate in leadership training and take on extra responsibilities throughout the year. They lead all-school assemblies, role model traditions and behavior, motivate student fund raisers, head the Student Council, captain clean-up teams, and teach electives.
Community Service extends beyond the school campus as well. We regularly clean up our road, visit the local retirement community and do trail maintenance at a nearby environmental center. Teachers incorporate services to the community into their curricula, designing projects that serve a broader audience.
